Preaching 101

What is Preaching?

Preaching is the act of proclaiming the Word of God with clarity, conviction, and compassion. It involves interpreting biblical texts, applying them to contemporary life, and communicating them in a way that is understandable and meaningful to the congregation.

A sermon structure is the purposeful ordering of ideas and experiences within a sermon. It serves as a blueprint, helping the preacher determine what material will be included and how it will be organized into meaningful and impactful proclamations. A well-structured sermon ensures clarity, coherence, and effectiveness in communicating God’s Word to His people. Historically, preachers have discovered that certain structures work exceptionally well for engaging and edifying congregations.

A cohesive structure enhances the overall impact of your message, ensuring it leaves a lasting impression. Secondly, a well-ordered sermon allows for a logical progression of ideas, making it easier for the audience to follow. Lastly, a structured sermon helps an audience to easily understand one’s message.

The structures are divided into three categories: thematic structures, textual structures, and dynamic structures.

  1. Thematic Structures: These arise from the main teaching of the sermon. The preacher identifies a primary teaching and then divides it into logical points for the hearers to follow. Each point builds upon the previous one, creating a coherent and logical progression.

  2. Textual Structures: These arise directly from the text of the sermon. They may follow a verse-by-verse approach, move from the text to the application, or incorporate the genre of the text into the preaching. This method ensures that the sermon remains closely tied to the scripture.

  3. Dynamic Structures: These arise from the experiences of the hearers. They take into account the cultural and spiritual modes of understanding of the audience and use these experiences to enhance the proclamation of the gospel. This approach helps to make the message more relevant and impactful to the listeners’ lives.
